Installation Overview

A high-level look at what goes into a typical vehicle install. This covers the physical work — mounting, routing, and wiring. CWI handles the device configuration (network settings, server connection, etc.) separately.

The components

  • Video recorder (DVR) — the central locked box, usually mounted in a cabinet, overhead, or under a seat.
  • Cameras — interior and exterior, wired back to the recorder.
  • Router — provides the cellular connection; pairs with a roof antenna.
  • GPS antenna — for location/tracking.
  • LED status panel — mounted in the driver's view.
  • Panic button (if equipped).

Mounting the recorder & cameras

  • Mount the recorder where its door can still be opened and locked (the recorder won't sense the hard drive if its hatch isn't latched).
  • Position cameras for the required coverage (driver, passengers, doorway, road). Confirm the final location and angle before you button things up.
  • Caulk all exterior penetrations to keep water out.
  • Secure every camera with enough fasteners that the bracket can't move; protect cables from being pinched by trim or panels.

Antennas

  • Mount the roof antenna for the router with a clear view of the sky.
  • The GPS antenna must sit flat and face up toward the sky — an upside-down or sideways GPS antenna will not track. (When in doubt, test for a fix before finishing.)

Power & wiring

  • Provide the recorder with constant power, ignition (switched) power, and ground.
  • Use appropriately sized wire for the load — undersized wire is a common cause of intermittent problems. Don't run multiple devices off a wire meant for one.
  • Make sure the system shuts down with the vehicle (after its normal delay) so it doesn't drain the battery overnight.
  • Route the panic button wire and terminate it properly — don't leave it loose in the bundle.
  • Leave a little slack and service loop so wiring isn't pulled tight or at risk of falling out during future service.
  • Run an ethernet cable between the recorder and the router. (Don't forget it — it's easy to overlook.)

Before you leave

  • Confirm the system powers up, records, and comes online.
  • Note the bus/vehicle number and any serials for the records.

Get the GPS antenna orientation and the power wiring right the first time — they're the two most common causes of callbacks.
